ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 3 -- United States Patent no. 12,406,022, issued on Sept. 2, was assigned to International Business Machines Corp. (Armonk, N.Y.).
"Data augmentation for machine learning" was invented by Hiromi Kobayashi (Tokyo), Masaharu Sakamoto (Tokyo), Aya Nakashima (Tokyo), Kazuya Hirayu (Tokyo) and Sho Ikawa (Kanagawa-Ken, Japan).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A computer implemented method trains an image recognition model. A set of processor units creates a saliency map of an original image. The set of processor units superimposes the saliency map on the original image to form an augmented image, wherein the augmented image is used to train the image recognition model."
