ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 9 -- United States Patent no. 12,492,607, issued on Dec. 9, was assigned to Halliburton Energy Services Inc. (Houston).

"Hydrated metal carbonate for carbon capture and underground storage" was invented by Cem Sonat (Singapore), Michael Linley Fripp (Singapore) and Mathusan Mahendran (Singapore).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Systems and methods of the present disclosure relate to storing carbon dioxide (CO2) underground. A method includes contacting a metal tool with the CO2 and forming hydrated metal carbonates (HMCs) on the tool due to contact of the CO2 with the metal of the tool. Expansion of the tool occurs due to formation of the HMCs."
