ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 18 -- United States Patent no. 12,477,107, issued on Nov. 18, was assigned to Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Forderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Munich).

"Encoding and decoding a picture" was invented by Adam Wieckowski (Berlin), Phan Hoang Tung Nguyen (Berlin), Detlev Marpe (Berlin), Heiko Schwarz (Berlin) and Thomas Wiegand (Berlin).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An apparatus for decoding a picture is configured to partition the picture into coding blocks, using recursive multi-tree splitting.
