ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 19 -- United States Patent no. PP36,743, issued on June 17, was assigned to Florida Foundation Seed Producers Inc. (Marianna, Fla.).
"Citrus plant named 'UF 1859'" was invented by Frederick Gmitter Jr. (Lakeland, Fla.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A new and distinct seedless, sweet orange-mandarin hybrid, with distinctive shape and color, that can be harvested through a season extending for at least three months. The new citrus cultivar, named 'UF 1859', also appears to be more tolerant to HLB than most mandarin varieties, showing standard leaf, foliage, and fruit morphology and dense foliage despite being CLas positive."
