ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 31 -- United States Patent no. 12,513,813, issued on Dec. 30, was assigned to FERMI FORWARD DISCOVERY GROUP LLC (Chicago).

"Enhanced NB3SN surfaces for superconducting cavities" was invented by Sam Posen (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Anna Grassellino (Batavia, Ill.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A system and method for treating a cavity comprises arranging a niobium structure in a coating chamber, the coating chamber being arranged inside a furnace, coating the niobium structure with tin thereby forming an Nb3Sn layer on the niobium structure, and doping the Nb3Sn layer with nitrogen, thereby forming a nitrogen doped Nb3Sn layer on the niobium structure."
