"Orientation specific optics" was invented by Daniel S. Spiro (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An optical lens structure with an arrangement comprising at least two directional precision lensed optics configured to illuminate a surface coupled to a luminaire and at least one of a horizontal and a vertical surface below the luminaire."
