ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 6 -- United States Patent no. 12,280,016, issued on April 22, was assigned to Drexel University (Philadelphia).

"Utilizing the innate immune system to deliver therapeutic agents" was invented by Kara L. Spiller (Glenside, Pa.) and Kathryn L Wofford (Philadelphia).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "In one aspect, the invention provides a composition comprising at least one monocyte comprising an agent that increases monocyte homing to a site of injury, and an effective amount of a drug. In another aspect, the invention provides a method of using the composition to deliver a drug to a site of injury."

The patent was filed on Feb. 18, 2022, under Application No. 17/651,673.
