"Process for a batch gravity thickening and fermentation of a mixed liquor" was invented by Thomas E. Coleman (Yakima, Wash.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An efficient and low-cost process for gravity thickening and fermentation of waste activated sludge withdrawn from the surface of an activated sludge aeration basin for use with treatment systems designed for "enhanced biological phosphorus removal" (EBPR).
