"Bi-directional communication through capacitive coupling in wireless devices" was invented by Francesco Pugliese (Bologna, Italy) and Marco Pifferi (Predosa, Italy).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A system and method for bi-directional communication through capacitive coupling is achieved with capacitive plates within the environment of a wireless power transfer system. Data is transferred using capacitance over a separate path from the transfer of electrical power in the wireless power transfer system."
