ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 30 -- United States Patent no. 12,371,367, issued on July 29, was assigned to CORNING Inc. (Corning, N.Y.).

"High strength glass-ceramics" was invented by George Halsey Beall (Big Flats, N.Y.), Qiang Fu (Painted Post, N.Y.) and Charlene Marie Smith (Corning, N.Y.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A glass-ceramic article comprises silica, lithia, phosphorus pentoxide, and zirconia in amounts that, when heat treated, provide a glass-ceramic including a lithium disilicate (L2Si2O5) crystalline phase. The glass-ceramic may have high fracture toughness, transparency, hardness, and may be strengthen via ion-exchange."
