ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 16 -- United States Patent no. 12,309,427, issued on May 20, was assigned to Contrast Inc. (Albuquerque, N.M.).
"Image compression" was invented by Willie C. Kiser (Albuquerque, N.M.), Michael D. Tocci (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Nora Tocci (Albuquerque, N.M.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The invention provides methods that improve image compression and/or quality within the JPEG process by using a low-pass filter to remove high frequency components from image data, which removes blocking artifacts. Preferred embodiments apply the low-pass filter to the Chroma components after decompression prior to conversion into RGB color space."
