ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 26 -- United States Patent no. 12,398,531, issued on Aug. 26, was assigned to Caterpillar Inc. (Peoria, Ill.).

"Washout protection for a bit" was invented by David Bruno Parzynski Jr. (Peoria, Ill.) and Thomas Marshall Congdon (Dunlap, Ill.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A tool bit includes a working portion, and a shank portion defining a shank free end. The working portion includes a pair of side inserts, and a front insert."

The patent was filed on April 26, 2022, under Application No. 17/729,242.
