ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 12 -- United States Patent no. 12,299,570, issued on May 13, was assigned to California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, Calif.).

"Stain-free detection of embryo polarization using deep learning" was invented by Cheng Shen (Pasadena, Calif.), Changhuei Yang (Pasadena, Calif.), Adiyant Lamba (Cambridge, Great Britain) and Magdalena D. Zernicka-Goetz (Pasadena, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Disclosed herein include systems, devices, and methods for detecting embryo polarization from a 2D image generated from a 3D image of an embryo that is not fluorescently labeled using a convolutional neural network (CNN), e.g., deep CNN."
