ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 4 -- United States Patent no. 12,318,559, issued on June 3, was assigned to Becton Dickinson and Co. (Franklin Lakes, N.J.).

"Ported IV catheter having external needle shield and internal blood control septum" was invented by S. Ray Isaacson (Layton, Utah), Stephen T. Bornhoft (Midvale, Utah), Weston F. Harding (Lehi, Utah), Yiping Ma (Layton, Utah) and Siddarth K. Shevgoor (Mission Viejo, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An extravascular system is provided which includes a catheter adapter having a blood control septum configured to control flow of a fluid through the catheter adapter, the catheter adapter further having a catheter configured for intravenous insert...
