According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An ankle foot orthosis comprises an upper portion configured for placement on a lower leg and a lower portion configured for placement on a foot, connected to one another at at least one joint. A strap attached to the upper portion and the lower portion includes at least a portion that is clastic, and a ratchet mechanism allows an incremental increase in stretching the clastic and being releasable to release all tension."
