ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 4 -- United States Patent no. 12,324,114, issued on June 3, was assigned to Apple Inc. (Cupertino, Calif.).

"Laser-marked electronic device housings" was invented by Michael S. Nashner (San Jose, Calif.), Erica K. Block (Cupertino, Calif.) and Shota Aoyagi (San Francisco).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A housing for an electronic device is disclosed. A surface of the housing includes a laser-formed marking. The marking comprises a plurality of laser-formed pixels and may include a grayscale image. Electronic devices including the laser-marked housings and techniques for laser-marking the housings are also disclosed."
