"Hierarchical universal device identifier" was invented by Ramin Firoozye (Berkeley, Calif.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "In various embodiments described in the present disclosure, a device identifier is generated based at least in part on a set of values corresponding to a set of fields representing information associated with a device. For example, the set of values are converted to a bitstream which is encoded using an alphabet based at least in part on an encoding schema."
