ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 6 -- United States Patent no. 12,462,388, issued on Nov. 4, was assigned to Adobe Inc. (San Jose, Calif.).

"Sub-object segmentation" was invented by Brian Price (Pleasant Grove, Utah), Tai-Yu Pan (Columbus, Ohio) and Qing Liu (Santa Clara, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A method includes receiving an object mask of an object in an image. The method further includes generating a mask of a sub-object in the image using a machine learning model configured to receive the mask of the object. A first branch of the machine learning model predicts whether a pixel of the image belongs to a sub-object."
