ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 23 -- United States Patent no. 12,502,521, issued on Dec. 23, was assigned to ABIOMED Inc. (Danvers, Mass.).

"Intravascular blood pump" was invented by Thorsten Siess (Aachen, Germany), Jimpo Wang (Danvers, Mass.), Gerd Bruno Spanier (Aachen, Germany) and Dion Mraz (Danvers, Mass.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An improved intravascular blood pump. Intravascular blood pumps using the present technology may be powered by an onboard motor unit configured to be located inside the patient's body, but which is separated from the pump unit by a flexible intermediate section housing a flexible drive shaft."
