According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A one-piece drain fitting with an integral mounting flange. The mounting flange has a plurality of holes for quickly securing the mounting flange to the top or bottom side of a wood sub-floor with screws or nails. The drain fitting can alternatively be installed in pre-cast or cast-in-place concrete without the use of fasteners. The drain fitting can be provided with a removable temporary cover for keeping out debris during construction."
