"Internal combustion engine" was invented by Philip Franklin Gaziano (Wilbraham, Mass.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An internal combustion engine has a cylinder block that defines a blind cylinder bore that terminates within the cylinder block. A piston is positioned within the blind cylinder bore. The piston is connected to two crankshafts. A combustion chamber is formed between the piston and the blind end of the cylinder bore. Various mechanisms can provide actuation, timing control, and during control of valves that control flow into and out of the combustion chamber."
