"Lifting pivot door" was invented by Paul Brous (West Palm Beach, Fla.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A lifting pivot door whose pivots are laterally offset from the edge of the door such that no hinges are required to operate the door. Cams operatively connected to the door handle are activated when the door handle is moved between the unlocked and locked positions. In the locked position, the cams press a mull bar in the bottom of the door until it rests on the floor of the entry and prevents access by water and/or pests.
