"Insect trap" was invented by James P Janniello (Sarasota, Fla.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A device for converting a container into an insect trap. A device opening is configured to allow an insect to enter an interior cavity of the container and configured to prevent the insect from exiting the interior cavity of the container using a unidirectional barrier."

The patent was filed on June 13, 2019, under Application No. 16/501,834.
