"Adjustable workpiece support" was invented by Calvin Simmons (Suffolk, Va.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A novel adjustable sawhorse or workpiece support. The device is an adjustable apparatus to assist in various carpentry and other projects. The device has a work surface, four legs, and a gear and crank mechanism to allow for height adjustment. The device also includes hinges or pivots beneath the work surface that allow for angular adjustment of the work surface. Further, the device has a fastener to secure the work surface and allow for easy removal or replacement, if necessary."
