According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention is a device designed to sense changes in the pressure within pipelines containing gases or liquids and to provide a mechanical output upon rapidly decreasing pressure while providing no response when pressures change more slowly. The device employs magnetic forces to eliminate potential seal leakage from dynamic seals. Such a design offers environmental benefits with zero potential for leakage of pipeline gases or liquids into the atmosphere."
