"Vacuum-assisted soft tissue biopsy device" was invented by Nathan Otis Nelson (South Jordan, Utah), John Robert Durham (Cottonwood Heights, Utah) and Michael Hallisey (Old Saybrook, Conn.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Devices and methods used to obtain a tissue sample utilizing a vacuum assist are disclosed. The devices include a handle, an inner cannula, and an outer cannula. The devices include a vacuum tube in communication with a sample notch of the inner cannula.
