"Multipurpose shears" was invented by Alexander Stephen Swan (Plain City, Utah) and Cameron J Nielson (Orem, Utah).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Foldable, multipurpose shears can have a pair of shearing blades, each blade having a sharp side and a blunt side. The blades are connected to handles via a hinge, and the handles have one side that is straighter and another side that is more rounded or irregularly shaped.
