"Sonic mixer" was invented by Arnold H Cohen (Andover, Mass.) and James Q Maloy (Marina Del Ray, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An apparatus designed to mix powders or fluids, or both, with the least amount of effort and energy. The mixing is accomplished with an assembly similar to an audio speaker connected to a container. The apparatus is charged with an electrical source which causes it to agitate the container so that its contents are mixed. Through a variety of different methods, the apparatus is caused to go into mechanical resonance thereby maximizing its agitation and thus its mixing efforts....
