According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A Universal Spa Pump (USP) allows a user to change the orientation of the pump discharge by redesigning a pump backplate to attach to an electric motor (both 48-frame and 56-frame) separately from the connections between the pump frontplate and a volute. To change the discharge orientation on the USP, the bolts attaching the frontplate (or volute) to the backplate are removed, the frontplate rotated, and the bolts reattached.
