According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention relates to the use of N-acetyl cysteine to increase the effect of alkali or alkaline earth metal metabisulfite salts and ascorbic acid in counteracting pigmentation of tooth surfaces, dental mucous membranes, dental restorations or dental restorations in patients treated with chlorhexidine, and an oral care product comprising chlorhexidine, at least one metabisulfite salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, ascorbic acid, and N-acetyl cysteine."
