"Gutter cover" was invented by Andrew Joe Compton (Sherwood, Ark.) and Keith Wayne Shephard (Beaverdam, Ky.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A gutter cover includes an upper hood panel, a lower cover panel, and a retractable plate. The upper hood panel is configured to be joined to an inclined roof sheathing covering rafters of a roof, to extend above a gutter and to no more than partially shield the gutter from above.
