According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A tourniquet includes a support structure with a slot at one end for receiving a strap and a gate opposite the at least one strap slot for retaining a windlass relative to the support structure. A first end of the strap is threaded through the windlass and the slot and is attached back upon itself to form a loop.
