According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A hand immobilizer system which has a body in the general shape of the hand, including a portion shaped like the metacarpus of the hand laterally outwardly extending portions or digits shaped like the fingers of the hand. The hand immobilizer further comprises a pliable piece of material, e.g., aluminum which is either formed or can be formed so as to at least partially encircle the finger of the patient and the digit of the hand immobilizer on which the finger rests."
