"Safety accessory for knifes" was invented by Marc M. Gaelen (Short Hills, N.J.), Keegan Schoch (Leechburg, Pa.) and John Vassa (Nazareth, Pa.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The invention is that of an ovoid-shaped cutting accessory configured to fit over the spine of a knife to allow its user to provide downward pressure to the spine of the knife to aid in safely cutting through materials of such density that the knife handle alone does not allow the user to safely provide sufficient pressure to cut through the material.
