According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A system for protecting electronic information when stored 'at rest' in which the information is first encrypted into ciphertext and whereby the ciphertext is divided into two or more parts (fragments). The two or more fragments are stored in two or more completely independent computer networks and the encryption key used to encrypt the electronic information is stored in one of the independent computer networks and is not shared with any other independent network.
