According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The fishing rod holder and retainer are configured to hold and retain a fishing rod in a gunwale of a boat. A cylindrical tube is coupled to a top plate and configured to extend downwardly at an angle into the gunwale of the boat to hold the butt of the fishing rod. A rod retainer includes a retainer tether having a retainer fastener at a distal end thereof and positioned for extension at the top plate adjacent the retainer opening to couple to the fishing rod.
