"Exercise device" was invented by Lottie Louise Chest (West Deptford, N.J.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An exercise device includes a track unit with a generally horizontal track and a carriage device supporting a bench for receiving the torso of a user. A swivel permits rotation of the bench in a plane parallel to the track, the user propels the carriage along the track. A push-off plate is mounted perpendicular to the track positioned near the first end of the track unit for being engaged by the feet of a user.
