"Retaining device for securing wood to a saw mill" was invented by David Earl Grant (Brewer, Maine).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention discloses a system for retaining a piece of wood onto a saw mill in an orientation at an angle to the horizontal, such that horizontal cuts made to the wood result in shorter planks with full exposure of wood end grain, and further, a system for rotating a piece of wood on a saw mill in order to create lumber with specific polygonal cross sections; and methods for producing lumber from pieces of wood using said systems."
