According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A device and method adapted to determine a location of stud members within a wall or other structure are provided. A stud finder includes, in one implementation, a body for housing a magnet, with a front section and back section, and a magnet, the magnet being axially magnetized. The body is shaped in order to ensure these axially magnetized poles are always substantially facing the wall, and metal fasteners, when in use.
