"Plunger lift system" was invented by James Allen Jefferies (Granbury, Texas).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A plunger lift system for lifting fluids in a well bore includes a plunger body having a central bore, and a bypass valve assembly disposed at a lower end of the plunger body. The bypass valve assembly includes a valve cage, a valve stem disposed at least partially within the valve cage, a clutch bobbin carried by the valve cage and being operable associated with the valve stem, and at least one canted coil spring carried by the clutch bobbin for controlling movement of the valve stem."
