ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 9 -- United States Patent no. 12,285,307, issued on April 29.

"System and method for guiding medical instruments" was invented by Peter Wohrle (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) and Oded Bahat (Beverly Hills, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A system is disclosed. The system contains an instrument configured to fit in a patient's anatomy, an optical sensor associated with the instrument, a processing unit receiving data from the optical sensor, and a display displaying position of the instrument in the patient's anatomy based on the data from the optical sensor."

The patent was filed on Feb. 18, 2016, under Application No. 15/047,545.
