Brief Summary: High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) is recommended as first-line treatment to prevent intubation in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and to prevent reintubation after extubation. Accumulating data suggest that strong inspiratory efforts and their persistence are associated with HFNO failure.
