Johannesburg, Nov. 22 -- With US President Donald Trump refusing to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg and deputing the US Charge d'affaires to represent Washington in order to accept the baton, an upset South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has said he will not hand over the G20 presidency to a junior US official.

The 2026 G20 Summit is slated to be held in Miami, Florida.

President Ramaphosa has said he views the US' stand as a breach of established protocol. He last week suggested that he might hand the gavel to an "empty chair" if no appropriately senior US official attends the ceremony.

"I don't want to hand over to an empty chair, but the empty chair will be there," he has said.
