Guwahati, July 10 -- When the recent elephant population estimation was released earlier this year, it was a matter to rejoice for everyone in Assam. And why not? The State, despite challenges like large scale habitat fragmentation and growing human elephants conflicts, could capture 5828 jumbos in the state with 36 percent adult females.
The estimation also brought to the fore that the Adult Female to Calf Ratio was recorded at 0.49 (49 calves per 100 adult females), indicating robust reproduction and successful replacement in the population.
