Mumbai, June 28 -- The Congress in Maharashtra has demanded that the government should withdraw its order to make Hindi language compulsory from class 1 in the state.
"This is a crooked plan of the RSS and BJP to eliminate all languages ??in the 8th schedule of the Constitution and keep only Hindi," said Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Harshvardhan Sapkal.
"We will not allow Marathi language to be strangled," he said.
Talking to media, the Congress state president said any attempt to compel students to learn Hindi would not work. "Marathi is not just a language but our way of life", he said.
