Wayanad, Feb. 11 -- A wild elephant trampled a tribal youth to death at Noolpuzha near Sulthan Bathery in Kerala's Wyanad district near the state's border with Tamil Nadu, officials said on Tuesday.

Forest officials identified the deceased as Manu (45) of Kappad Unathi, a tribal hamlet.

His body was found lying in a paddy field adjoining the forest areas by residents during a search operation on Tuesday morning.

Sources said the elephant attacked Manu on Monday evening while he and his wife Chandrika were returning to their house from a nearby shop. While his wife ran away, Manu's body was found on Tuesday.

The footmarks of the elephant were also seen near the body.
