Florida, March 20 -- Russia's Veronika Kudermetova progressed to the second round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over China's Wang Xinyu.
World No. 52 Kudermetova served seven aces and won 79 percent of her first serve points to take the match in an hour and 31 minutes on Wednesday.
Wang, who is ranked 39th, saved six of eight break points but was let down by a series of unforced errors against the former world No. 9.
Kudermetova will meet compatriot Mirra Andreeva in her next match after the 17-year-old had a first-round bye.
Meanwhile, Tseng Chun-Hsin from Chinese Taipei advanced to the second round of the men's competition with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Italian Mattia Bellucci.
