Hyderabad, Nov. 16 -- Senior editor Devulapalli Amar stressed the need for a voluntary, non-governmental press council to safeguard media freedom while ensuring accountability.

He was speaking at the National Press Day programme organised jointly by the Department of Information and Public Relations and the Telangana Media Academy at the academy's auditorium in Nampally on Sunday.

Amar said there was an urgent need to expose the unethical practices being carried out in the name of journalism. Recalling the formation of the first Press Commission and the Press Council of India on November 16, 1966, following the guidance of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he said National Press Day is observed each year to honour that milestone.
