Thiruvananthapuram, July 11 -- Vizhinjam International Seaport, marking the first anniversary of the berthing of its first container ship on July 11, 2024, has handled 8,30,000 containers so far.
"Over the past year, 392 ships have arrived at Vizhinjam. Among them were 23 ultra-large container ships (ULCS), including the MSC Irina, one of the largest container vessels in the world. Several of these ships, including the Irina, berthed in India for the first time," Kerala Minister for Ports VN Vasavan said today.
As Vizhinjam celebrates its first anniversary, construction of the second phase, estimated to cost over Rs 10,000 crore, is set to begin soon. Vizhinjam is poised to become the gateway to India's maritime dominance.
