Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 8 -- Kerala's Vizhinjam International Seaport has achieved a new milestone by handling a container vessel with a draft of 16.95 metres, the deepest ever recorded at the port.

The vessel MSC Virginia, which left for Spain yesterday morning, arrived at Vizhinjam from Adani Mundra Port with a draft of 16 metres.

After handling close to 5,000 TEUs of cargo at the port, the draft increased to 16.95 metres, making it the second-deepest draft container ship ever managed at any Indian port.

Previously, the highest draft vessel at Vizhinjam had measured 16.8 metres. So far, 17 container vessels with drafts above 16.5 metres have berthed at the port, underscoring its ability to handle ultra-large carriers.
